I considered making a production blog for the thing I'm working on, but I thought it would take away from the finished product if people had seen portions of it in advance.
Your animation looks quite polished. I'm impressed that you're still doing pencil tests on celluloid. Is there a reason for that? |

Hey, Ken,
Production blog looks good . I left you a couple of comments over there.
I think it's cool that you're doing it with hand-drawn animation and the intro. with the stop-motion character . So refreshing to see some drawn animation that doesn't have that typical "Flash" look to it . I'll be looking forward to seeing it develop as you post more . _________________ my blog:

Thanks David-
Yes, in regards to your post, I do intend to throw a blink into that really long hold to keep the elephant alive, and there will be narration over almost the whole film. The long hold is due to the fact that I cut out some action before he starts moving again. I'll post the original version this weekend sometime.
I had second thoughts as well about creating a production blog and leaking out scenes for the film to the whole world...thought it would be wiser to keep it hidden from the world until it's finished, other than for close friends. But then I realized it would be important to try and generate some buzz and a support system to help keep me motivated to finish it. Plus it's neat to see the whole process unfold, and educational for others, I hope...and all films need to be marketed before they're released, so what better way to do it. I'm still hesitant to post the entire film in leica reel-format...that is still up in the air, for the reasons MarkBorok stated. Don't want to give too much away just yet.
I'm still here at the Platform Animation Festival, and although I haven't been able to attend all of the screenings, the ones I have seen hardly contain any hand-drawn animation. A good majority of the selections are Flash, 3D, or multi-media abstract things, along with an occasional stop-motion film. The few that are indeed hand-drawn are mostly in the independent/NFB-ish primitive drawing genre...sometimes beautiful, sometimes distracting, but nothing remotely close to the traditional cartoon quality I'm working in.
Maybe people have lost patience with the repetitive-ness of traditional 2D animation and are too pre-occupied with the tools that do so much more for you. This was the sentiment of Don Hertzfeldt and Bill Plympton, who did a Q&A after the 'Animation Show' screening this evening. They are both committed to using traditional tools like film and pencil/paper, and as a result, are more unique and stand out in the crowd. _________________ Ken Priebe

Also to comment to MarkBorok, I'm not sure what you mean by "pencil tests on celluloid"....I'm not using film or cels. I'm animating on paper and shooting the pencil tests digitally with Digicel Flipbook, if that's what you are referring to.
For the final film, all the drawings will be scanned into the computer, colored in and composited with watercolor backgrounds. _________________ Ken Priebe

I was just noticing that one of your trailers has an Academy leader in front, the one with the countdown. So I presumed that was shot on celluloid (film). I might have gotten confused and thought all the pencil tests were also shot on film. |
