Does anyone know of anyone who has managed to become a professional animator without going to an animation/art school?
I ask because I am desperate to become a 2D animator and cannot afford to go to a school, so I'm completely self-taught so far. A success story would help me feel that I'm not fighting a losing battle!

Hey man, I am in the same boat ... I've had some training in studio art (many years ago), but that is about the extent of it. It's why I have joined Animaticus, to get inspiration and guidance from the real people! _________________ Brett McCoy

Oh, I do remember one guy -- Stephen Silver! Not sure if he's an animator, but he does character design and also teaches (I am taking his class in October, in fact). He's completely self-taught

The class he is teaching is on here:

(He is doing the one on character design, it's a correspondence video course). _________________ Brett McCoy

I wish his courses were free!!
You mean Brian May? Yeah, he just went back to university to finish his PhD. Well maybe I'll be drawing on the roof of Buckingham Palace before too long! _________________ Feeling artistic? Visit Andy's Animation!

Yep, Brian May... I think he did just get his doctorate, after all these years. _________________ Brett McCoy

Dean Yeagle dropped out of art school, I don't know if that counts.
I do recommend taking some drawing classes at a community college if you want to do this for a living. You will be competing with people who DID study with professional teachers. Animation is no longer a learn on the job profession: the studios expect you to be trained before you come in the door.
If you only want to amuse yourself, you won't need training.
