Mirage -- WOW!

I spent this past weekend working with the (fully functioning) Mirage demo ... it took a bit of time learning how to get around, but I got up and running pretty quickly. It's definitely easier than using paper in many ways... (maybe not necessarily better, but that remains to be seen). It combines great artist tools usually found in paint programs, plus excellent compositing and FX tools that are found in high-end imaging software... and no more scanning!

I am just using a lowly Graphire4 Wacom tablet right now, but found I get much better feel for drawing if I tape a piece of paper over the tablet... keeps the stylus from slipping and I can control my pencil lines better.

I can see why everyone has been raving about it!

If you liked Mirage check out TVP Animation - made by the guys that created Mirage. It has a multiple plane camera, rotating canvas like in Painter and will have an Exposure Sheet tool and many New video editing features added this month.

Look at the feature list here

or

Take care

I see from the TVP site there is some kind of copyright infringement claim made against Bauhaus regarding Mirage... do you know what that's about?

Yikes.

I just bought a licensed copy of Mirage... this means, TVPaint's view, I have illegal and unauthorized software?

That will be for the courts to decide and I doubt it will be anytime soon.
I have Mirage 1.5 , also . If at some point in the future the court rules in favor of TVPaint as the sole owner of the software which undergirds Mirage
then we'll have to put up some additional money to upgrade to TVPaint (if you feel the need to upgrade ... Mirage 1.5 is a stable and very functional software as it is now ) . The downside of this in the present is that I don't expect to see any updates to Mirage from Bauhaus until after the lawsuit is resolved.

This dispute between Bauhaus/Mirage and TVPaint very confusing and distressing. I don't know which "side" to believe is in the right (Bauhaus or TVPaint) Like I said , Mirage 1.5 is a perfectly usable and stable software as is , but some of the new Features in TVPaint are things I've wanted to see in Mirage for quite some time , plus I'm dealing with the Intel Mac problem. Mirage won't run on the Intel-based Macs and I just got a new MacBook Pro laptop which I'd like to be able to run Mirage on . There is a workaround, which is to install Windows XP on the MacBook and boot it up in Windows XP to run Mirage. I just don't think it should be necessary to purchase and install Windows XP to run a single application. TVPaint runs on the Intel Macs. If Bauhaus would solve the problem with Mirage not running on the Intel processor Macs I wouldn't have given TVPaint another look (which is again a way of saying that Mirge is a really good application as it is now . I don't have any complaints about Mirage. )

Do not worry about your using Mirage. What you have is not illegal. Also remember you are viewing all the infringement from the TVP side when it was Bauhaus who took TVP to court. Many of the promissed functions came from Bauhaus so I wonder if they will be available legally from TVP.
And I will tell you that you will never get the kind of support from a software company like Bauhaus. Plus Bauhaus has some things in store that will blow the socks off anything out there to date!
I would also add that it was TVP who did not deliver the goods to Bauhaus that they had agreed upon.

Thanks, I am quite pleased with the software.

Rusty, this is a good point and I'm trying my best to steer clear of taking "sides" in the Bauahus vs. TVPaint dispute, so I hope my previous post didn't seem anti-Bauhaus. I've edited my post to de-emphasize the comparison of Mirage to TVPaint. Like I said, the courts will decide on the ownership of the source code and the right to market the software. Putting that aside, it's a great animation/drawing/painting software , whatever it's called , TVPaint or Mirage.

I see today that there is a new 'rotate canvas' tool for Mirage. Smile

No Dave you didn't seem like you were taking sides. I just don't want people to get caught up in it either so I gave the warning.

On another note yes, Pencil shooter is finally out for Mirage and it gives some cool new tools including the rotate canvas which had been in the works for a while but is finally available FREE!

There are some other new tools coming soon that will give you even more cool tools.

Like what? I must admit I'm very curious to know what's coming down the pipeline on bauhaus's side. I haven't heard a stitch of information in regards to new features in a year - aside from the few plugin additions. I am - like a lot of folks more interested in the features of the software and less concerned about how the whole thing between TVP and Mirage plays out. It would be nice to feel secure about purchasing a software (especially when it goes over the $100 range) without worrying about not making the right decision. Two software companies with similar flagship software make things hard. Take care

BTW I apologize to anyone if I ruffled any feathers with my TVP introduction to this thread - I only wanted to inform. RMills I'm a fan of your work always inspirational.

These kinds of issues are pretty commonplace in the software industry.

Unfortunately I'm not at liberty to give details of what Bauhaus is working on. And yes I know that sounds like the same ol' story but especially when they are dealing with legal action they don't want anything getting out about what they're doing. I will tell you this however, for the near future it the new stuff will be in the form of plugins but will make creating animation even easier. Secondly I will say that to figure out what they are doing think of some of the things you wish Mirage did (or didn't do) and you'll get an idea of what will be coming (believe me they've been listening). Wink
