new "Ratatouille" trailer shows some 2D animationI just posted this on my 'blog:New Japanese "Ratatouille" trailer (it's from YouTube and no telling how long it will stay up , so take a look now) It looks spectacular , but one thing caught my eye. It appears that there is a little bit of "2D" animation of the chef, Auguste Gusteau, as he talks to Remy from the book . (see the trailer) . I wonder who animated it at Pixar and if they did it traditionally on paper, or animated on Cintiq ?

It does indeed look like a little homage to Sendak .
As much as I'd like to think those 2D images were done by traditional hand-drawn animation, now that I think about it I expect what we're actually seeing there is some sort of "toon-shaded" CG , which would probably be easier to integrate with the rest of the CG elements in the scene. |

Toons shaders are standard with Renderman, I believe. Now you can get expensive video filters to do 'toonifying': http://www.digitalanarchy.com/toon/toon_main.html They should call it the 'Bakshizer'

Holy 2D Batman ! You ain't seen nothin' yet !
I just got back from a preview screening of "Ratatouille". This is one where you definitely want to stick around through the whole end credit roll (and I don't mean a bloopers reel... they've been there , done that ). That's all I'm saying for now. Other than to say I loved it , the whole thing. Great movie . Pixar hits another home run . |

Can't wait to see it! We hoped that it would be screened at Annecy, because after the "Pixar story"-documentation there was a long break in the schedule. They didn't and we were so disappointed.

Actually, there was more "2D" animation in Ratatouille than I speculated.
One part in particular was the "tasting visualization efx" , to show what the characters were tasting when they ate certain types of food. Around 1400 drawings were created for the animation. Each one was scanned, painted and composited using two softwares: Animo and Photoshop.
